Key information: Across Pompeii
Extraordinary ruined Roman town beneath the looming presence of Mt Vesuvius, its destroyer.
Streets, homes ranging from the sophisticated villas of the wealthy to the simplest dwellings, shops and brothels, baths, forum and theatres. A complete town from 2,000 years ago, amazingly preserved.
Often crowded at the key sites, but you can still get away, especially out of high season. It is deeply fascinating and moving when you find a quiet corner.
