WALK SUMMARY

A delightful circuit of this small island protruding into Scapa Flow from the west coast of Burra.

After crossing a causeway from mainland Burra (on which we sat while a pair of curious young seals meandered about in the shallows eyeing us up), the choice is yours: a circuit in either direction (around 5.5km/1.5hrs), or climb the low hill for the maximum views, then drop over close- cropped heather to the low cliffs over Scapa Flow and turn left, as we did. The views over the grand sweep of Scapa Flow, with the bulk of Hoy looming to the west, really are magnificent, on a good day anyway (we were lucky, with a cloudless sky and sky-reflecting-calm water): it could be bleak on a bad day.
