WALK SUMMARY

The Zillertal Alps are a huge area of peaks and glacial drama by the Austrian-Italian border, draining through numerous valleys into the deep, wide Ziller valley.

The eastern Zillergrund tributary has a great bowl at its head, surrounded by 3,000m peaks, several of them nestling glaciers.

The 1.5hr, 500m, climb from the valley-head reservoir to the superbly sited Plauener Hut at 2,364m is a delight, with big views of the surrounding mountains.

You can extend the walk by beginning at the Gasthof Bärenbad at 1,450m.

Mountain weather. Come fully prepared.
