WALK SUMMARY

Sri Lankas’s cultural capital sits by a lovely lake in the foothills of the south-central highlands.  It is full of interest, albeit busy, so, with the great walking in the area, makes an excellent base for a few days.

Great walking in the area includes:

Kandy Centre and Botanical Gardens

Make a delightful wander around the lake and temples in the city centre. Relaxed “walking downtime” after the rigours of your travels.

The Knuckles

One of the country’s finest walking areas, and not to be missed by any serious walker.

Allagalla Mountain

This small range west of Kandy makes for some thrilling walking.  Allagalla is formed from granite, and has the sheer flanks that can typify them in the tropics give a wave, the Knuckles. The main climbs/descents are so steep that ropes are needed, although there is some gentler tea plantation and forest time as well. The shortish-but-amazing spine is what you come for, which is narrow enough in places to alarm those with vertigo issues. You either need to return the way you came, or you can head on to make a longer route, but will need to arrange transport. Beware the heat, as the range isn’t that high. A guide isn’t necessary, but will enhance things.

Walko stayed out of town at the gorgeous, peaceful Kandy House.

These can be tough walks in highish remote mountains with unpredictable weather and unclear paths. Come prepared.
