WALK SUMMARY
This mountainous region in the heart of the Sahara is a strange, harshly beautiful landscape of deep gorges, dry river beds and ‘stone forests’.
Tassili once had a very different climate, with abundant game, regular rainfall and fertile land. The plants and animals found here bear witness to former wetter periods.
This area has one of the most important groupings of prehistoric cave art in the world: More than 15,000 drawings and engravings record the animal and human life on the edge of the Sahara from 6000 BC to the first centuries AD.
A variety of fascinating and ruggedly beautiful walking.
