Plitvice Lakes National Park

The fascinating World's Most Amazing Places, a compendium of World Heritage Sites; says:

"Plitvice Lakes National Park contains a series of outstandingly beautiful lakes, caves and waterfalls. There are approximately twenty interlinked lakes between Mala Kapela Mountain and Pljesevica Mountain. The park's features were formed over thousands of years by the waters flowing over the limestone and chalk and depositing barriers of travertine rock, in the process creating natural dams; these in turn created lakes, caves and waterfalls. The dense forests of the park are rich in wildlife and are home to brown bears, wolves and many rare bird species." 

There are a lot of excellent and varied walks to be made in this gorgeous and fascinating landscape. The ideal would be to devise a suitable circuit. It is a popular tourist destination (understandably).  Stretches of duckboard are unavoidable so you will need to walk someway to 'get away!'

You won't travel to Croatia for this, but it is not to be missed if in the region.
