WALK SUMMARY
The hugely atmospheric old track from Pico to Madelena starts at a fascinating short lava tunnel high above Madalena, with a ferny micro-climate grotto as a delightful bonus.
Descend steadily across fields then on an old track, through beautiful rocky fields, Ireland-green from the regular rainfall, then woodland and agricultural plots, directly towards Madelena and Faial across the water.
(You can start higher, from the road to the Pico Mountain House, for longer walk.)
The route follows red-marked trails on the Kompass Azores map 1.
