WALK SUMMARY

sMairspitze sits on a ridge at the heart of the great Stubai bowl, back from the highest (border) ridge, so it commands extraordinary 360° views of the central Stubai, below the high Stubai border ridge with its dark rocky drama and still-gorgeous but tragically disappearing glaciers.

A brilliant day's walk, 4-6 hrs.

From the Nuremberg Hut, a northward ascent (on a branch of the Höhenweg) then a stiff westward climb up a lateral ridge and rockfield gets you to the high ridge, with the view-dazzling Mairspitze summit across a small bowl and a few minutes further northward. You can then retrace your route, or then descend westward on some thrilling (chilling?) cable-assisted cliff ledges to a sky-reflecting tarn. Here you can swing back across the Niederl pass, or head onward along the Höhenweg to the Sulzenau hut.

From the Sulzenau Hut, it is a longer walk but very doable as a day walk, including, for the masochist, dropping to just above the Nuremberg Hut to the west, before cutting back up over the Niederl pass.

The most direct access is south up the Langental to the Nürnberger Hut (also on the Höhenweg) at 2,278m‎ in 3 hrs+. It is a great place to stay, again, with plenty to explore – see our Above the Nürnberger Hut page.

See video clip here.

See our Stubai Alps page for more information on the area and photos.

WILLIAM MACKESY'S ACCOUNT
of this walk

August 2018

We leave the Nürnberger Hut at a leisurely 9.15 - we aren't on the trail all day - after a filling breakfast of muesli with yoghurt and honey.

We are climbing to the minor peak of Mairspitze on the high ridge 500m above the hut, and we have a steep slog ahead. Our path heads off with purpose, straight up the hillside. The route to the Niederl col straight above - lower, but an apparently direct flight up a sheer boulder almost-cliff - continues ahead, but we turn off right (north), climbing steadily up the hillside.

It is a gorgeous.....
