Hampta Pass
Key information: Hampta Pass
- This lovely trek crosses the Pir Panjal Range, climbing the fecund Hampta valley to its eponymous pass (at 4,270m), then descending to the Lahaul valley.
- Superb views from the high ground of nearby peaks, including Deo Tibba and Indrasan.
- A potentially perilous fording of the Indrasan River.
- Best months: Mid-July to late October. Monsoon until September.
- Tough walking in remote mountains, where altitude can cause real problems. Come fully prepared, including proper acclimatization. Briefish info in the now quite old Trekking and Climbing in the Indian Himalaya by Harish Kapadia. Check the current permit requirements.
- There have been (in 2000) deadly attacks on trekkers without local guides. Beware!!
