Key information: Daisen 
- This true cone of a volcano (and sacred peak) soars above the remote northern coast on the sea of Japan. Huge views.
- Rough terrain and quite a lot of virgin forest.
- You can hike the mountain in one long day, or continue and make a loop through rough, rugged landscape (with further fine views).
- Best months: 1st June (officially) to mid-November - July for flowers, Autumn for tree colours.
- Strenuous walking in remote mountains. Come fully prepared. A section in Lonely Planet's Trekking in Japan and a chapter in the charming if now quite old Trekking in Japan: an Adventurer's Guide to the Mountain Trails by Paul Hunt.
