Cerro Atacazo

Another spectacular, eroded volcano with superb views in the western cordillera. A steady ascent until you reach the crater rim, where the (visual) fireworks really start.

There are various ways up. If you start from the Panamericano it will be a longish ascent. You can get close to the top (an hour or so) via San Juan to the north with a 4WD, so a good acclimatization day walk.

From the peak you can return to San Juan (or Santa Catalina research station if you have come by foot), or, better head for Cerro El Pichaco a couple of km to the south and thence back to the Pan American Highway.

20 km south of Quito, so easy access if you have transport.

This is demanding, tough walking in remote mountains with uncertain weather, where altitude can cause real problems. Come fully prepared, including proper acclimatization.
