WALK SUMMARY

This exceptionally dramatic, jagged stump of a long-gone volcano near Otavalo makes for a superb but long, strenuous and (at the top) quite difficult day walk.

Several approach routes, the easiest being from La Esperanza to the north-east. A thrilling ascent of the rim ridge of the surviving part of the old crater. A long but steady climb. Parts of the trail are exposed but not difficult, although the final approach to the summit is very loose and exposed.

This is a very long day, climbing then descending some 2,000m to the very top in 8-10 hours. Many would "take a view" and stop for lunch at a viewpoint and head back down afterwards.

It often gest cloudy in the afternoons, so start early.

You can also circuit Cerro Imbabura in two days on a cobbled path, passing through small and remote villages en route. Lovely, fulfilling, interesting. 45 km, maximum altitude 3,380m.

Demanding walking in remote mountains with uncertain weather, where altitude can cause problems. Come fully prepared, including proper acclimatization.
