Around Col de Bavella

Here is a pair of superb walks from the brilliantly located high Col de Bavella in  Corsica's southern mountains, surrounded by the sharpest of granite spikes and cliffs and the toughest of granite slopes, in crevices of which Corsican pines somehow manage to eke a living among some pretty weird formations.

You can stay a night or two near the col, taking the time to enjoy this stunning area.

A reasonably easy 6km/2hr+ circuit leads from the col south through rock and pine and flowering maquis to the amazing Trou de la Bombe, a huge hole in the cliffs of the high ridge, with an enormous drop and wide views the other side. 

Follow the famous GR20 eastward, through gorgeous forest and maquis, from the col to the Foce Finosa saddle, for exceptional views even by Corsica's standards back towards the famous Aiguilles de Bavella and eastward into a wildly rough valley. A bit more demanding, 5+km/approaching 3hrs.

Note: beware of notorious summer thunderstorms, get away from risk areas if one approaches.
