WALK SUMMARY
The wild but lovely "lake district" of Néouville is a high granite mass which protrudes some 25km north of the high watershed border between France and Spain at the very heart of the high Pyrenees, south-east of Lourdes and west of St-Lary-Soulan. The Pyrenean National Park pushes north to cover some of its highest peaks, with a nature reserve protecting some of its loveliest and wildest lakes and mountains to the east.
This is a fantastically broken area of granite, serrated ridges looming above boulder-fields and lakes. But exceedingly beautiful, with peaks and pines reflected in its many lakes.
You can get right in to the heart of the reserve by road for some thrilling day walking. This is a place for multi-day walking, though, as it is served by good refuges linked by plenty of paths, many of them unmarked. There is a wide selection of possible routes, the best perhaps circling from Barreges in the north or the southernly road from St-Lary-Soulan. See Cicerone's Walks and Climbs in the Pyrenees.
The great GR10 Pyrenean traverse cuts southeast-northwest through some of the best country at the very heart of the park, although it will by definition not make a circuit in itself.
